Dealing With Dental Fear

Dental fear and anxiety is a real phobia that can hinder patients from achieving optimal oral health. When dental fear and anxiety prevent you from visiting the dentist, it may be time to find ways to manage. Patients who avoid the dentist are at an increased risk of developing complex dental problems typically associated with poor oral health. Patients may experience tooth decay, gum disease, tooth damage or even tooth loss.

Dr. David Rever is an experienced, compassionate dentist in Silver Spring, MD who is committed to helping each patient improve their smile. Dr. Rever and our dental care team see many patients who have dental fear and anxiety. We understand that patients with dental fear and anxiety have a difficult time visiting the dentist office. We take the time to listen to your concerns and create a dental experience based on your needs.

We aim to help patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their time in our Silver Spring dental office. We work with you to help you manage your dental fear and anxiety. For patients with extreme cases of dental fear, Dr. Rever may recommend one of our sedation dentistry options to help you feel relaxed and comfortable during your treatment.

Sedation Dental Care in Silver Spring, MD

Silver Spring dentist Dr. Rever offers a complete range of sedation dentistry options. During your consultation, Dr. Rever will ask for your full medical history, perform a full comprehensive exam, and discuss your sedation dentistry options. Depending on your needs, Dr. Rever may suggest oral conscious sedation or nitrous oxide as your preferred sedation method.

  • Oral Conscious Sedation: Oral conscious sedation is administered in pill form. Patients are instructed to take the pill prior to their treatment because it may take a few hours for patients to feel its effects. If oral conscious sedation is your preferred form of sedation, patients will need to coordinate a ride to and from our Silver Spring dental office.
  • Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide, sometimes referred to as “laughing gas,” is one of the most commonly used forms of dental sedation. Nitrous oxide allows patients to remain alert and completely relaxed during their treatment. Nitrous oxide is administered through a nasal mask. Once the mask is removed, the effects of nitrous oxide diminish.
