What Discolors Teeth?

Teeth can become yellow, stained, or discolored from a variety of conditions. Some causes of tooth discoloration include:

Smoking and Tobacco Products
The tar and nicotine found in smoking and tobacco products can create tough stains in tooth enamel. Tar naturally darkens enamel and nicotine yellows teeth. Tooth discoloration can stem from years of smoking and tobacco use.

Foods and Drinks
Certain foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, and sodas may stain teeth. These foods and drinks contain color pigments called chromogens which stain tooth enamel. Using a straw or drinking these drinks less can help protect your enamel from staining chromogens.

Medication
Certain antihistamines, antipsychotics, and high blood pressure medications may darken teeth. Treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation may also make teeth discolored.

Age
As we age, the outer layer of tooth enamel becomes thinner and wears away. This reveals the yellow dentin layer underneath.

Trauma
Teeth may be discolored from injuries made to the mouth. Teeth lay down more dentin after they are damaged. Chipped or cracked teeth may also become discolored.

In-Office and Take-Home Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening performed in-office takes one hour and is a great option for patients who are attending special events such as weddings and graduations. During the teeth whitening process, a bleaching gel is applied to teeth and then cured with a special light. This is done several times to ensure thorough treatment.

A convenient option for patients, take-home teeth whitening allows you to whiten their teeth in the comfort of your own home. Dr. Rever will provide you with bleaching gel and whitening trays to wear for hours each day. This process gradually whitens teeth over a period of several weeks.
