Why Crooked Teeth Are More Than A Cosmetic Issue

Crooked Teeth Are More Than A Cosmetic Issue

In a perfect world, we would all have a beautifully straight, white smile that functions perfectly with nothing more than routine checkups required to keep them that way. However, not everyone can be blessed with a straight smile. Crooked teeth can be handed down from your families genes, or you could have experienced trauma to your face which could have lead to crooked teeth.

A big problem with crooked teeth is that they will continue to grow crooked until you correct them. This will cause your teeth to overlap with your neighboring teeth and could even lead to an overbite or underbite. Overlapping teeth will create friction between your teeth that can cause damage to your teeth’s enamel.

We have made a list below of other dental issues that can arise from crooked teeth. If you are under the impression that crooked teeth are simply a cosmetic issue and can be addressed later, think again as crooked teeth are often the cause of many more severe dental issues.

Difficulty Cleaning

Crooked teeth will almost always create spaces within your smile. These spaces are hard to clean even with all the good dental tools, such as an electric toothbrush, Waterpik, floss, etc. These hard to reach spaces will give food and bacteria a place to hide within your smile, greatly increasing your chances of developing tooth decay, cavities, and gingivitis which is the beginning stages of gum disease.

Enhanced Risk Of Injury

Whether you are active in sports or have a labor intensive job that could potentially cause injury to your face, crooked teeth will enhance the likelihood of injury to the inside of your mouth. Crooked teeth will give a ridged and serrated like edge to your tooth line, making it more likely to puncture the inside of your lip or cheeks.

Self-Esteem

Crooked teeth are not pleasant to look at, and unfortunately, your smile is the first thing people will notice about you when they meet you. As we all know, first impressions will go along way in both your professional and personal life.
