Combatting Halitosis

Causes of Halitosis

There are a number of causes for halitosis (chronic bad breath). In many instances, it comes from bacteria build-up in the mouth. It could also stem from cavities, gum disease, trapped food particles, cracked fillings, and dirty dentures. That’s why maintaining a good oral care routine is so important.

Good oral hygiene practices are the key to fighting chronic bad breath. Brushing and flossing no less than twice a day will help to reduce the bacteria in your mouth. Using an antibacterial mouthwash will help to prevent cavities, reduce plaque and fight bad breath. Most importantly visit Dr. Rever every six months for your routine check-up.

Medical Factors

There are also internal medical conditions that can cause you to have bad breath such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Acid reflux
  • Postnasal drip
  • Chronic dry mouth

Diet

The foods you eat may cause halitosis as well. Your diet should be healthy and well balanced. Skipping meals and low-carb or no-carb diets can cause you to have bad breath. Consider reducing or avoiding foods such as:

  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Spicy foods
  • Coffee

Ways to combat halitosis

  • Brush twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss
  • Chew sugarless gum or mints
  • Reduce alcohol consumption
  • Avoid tobacco use (smoking/chewing)
  • Stay hydrated (avoid sugary drinks)

If bad breath persists, contact Advanced Total Dental Care to schedule an appointment. Dr. Rever will evaluate your condition and advise you of treatment options.
